Mobile phones, off‐farm employment and household income in rural India

Rural households in developing countries often depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. However, many also pursue off-farm economic activities either to complement farm income or because they lack access agricultural land. employment is informal and temporary. Searching jobs can be associated with high transaction costs, which may a constraint some households’ participation employment. The increasing spread of mobile phones help reduce these costs. Here, we test the hypothesis that phone ownership increases rural and—through this mechanism—also improves household income. We use nationally representative panel data from India regression models fixed effects control confounding factors unobserved heterogeneity. find positively likelihood participating various types employment, including casual wage labour, salaried non-agricultural self-employment. This association larger female-headed than male-headed households. estimates show income, partly channelled through mechanism.
